Oneida County, WI – In a devastating turn of events, 76-year-old Robert D. Canfield from Sun Prairie has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash that occurred over the weekend. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office released this information in a recent news release, shedding light on the unfortunate incident.

The collision took place at approximately 10:45 a.m. on November 19th at the intersection of Hwy. K and Hwy. 51, just north of Tomahawk. According to authorities, Canfield was operating a 2018 Cadillac X5, traveling southbound on Hwy. 51, when he attempted to make an eastward turn onto Hwy. K. Tragically, it was during this turn that a 2022 Mack semi-truck collided with Canfield’s Cadillac.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, immediately dispatching a medical helicopter to assist Canfield. However, despite their best efforts, Canfield succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported. Remarkably, the driver of the semi-truck emerged from the accident unscathed.
To determine the exact sequence of events leading to the crash, the Wisconsin State Patrol has commenced a thorough crash reconstruction investigation. Their aim is to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and provide closure to Canfield’s grieving family.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was not alone in their response to the accident. Numerous other agencies lent their support, including the Oneida County HAZMAT Team, Oneida County Ambulance Service, Lifelink Helicopter, Cassian Fire, Nokomis Fire and First Responders, Minocqua and Woodruff Police Departments, and the Oneida County Highway Department. The collaborative efforts of these organizations ensured that the situation was handled with utmost professionalism and efficiency.
