Tragedy Strikes as 50-Year-Old Man Falls Victim to Medical Malpractice
BALANGIR – In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old man lost his life after reportedly being administered the wrong injection by a quack in Balangir on Sunday. The victim, identified as Shiva Mahananda from Chanabahal village within Muribahal police limits, sought medical aid from Pramod Mahakud, a self-proclaimed healthcare provider from a neighboring village.
The Fatal Turn of Events
According to sources, the unfortunate incident occurred when Shiva accidentally injured his leg while cutting wood at his residence. The injury caused profuse bleeding, prompting his wife, Surubali, to urgently seek medical assistance from Pramod Mahakud. However, little did they know that this decision would have dire consequences.
Pramod examined Shiva’s condition and administered what was believed to be a necessary injection. Tragically, just a few hours later, Shiva lost consciousness. His family immediately rushed him to a hospital in Kantabanji, but their efforts were in vain as the doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Kantabanji police were promptly informed, and they subsequently seized the body for postmortem analysis.
A Wife’s Accusations
Devastated by the sudden loss of her husband, Surubali alleged that Pramod was responsible for administering the wrong injection, leading to Shiva’s untimely demise. Expressing her suspicion, she claimed, “Since Pramod provides medical treatment to patients in nearby areas, I reached out to him after my husband injured his leg. However, after receiving the injection, my husband lost consciousness and eventually succumbed to his condition.”

Medical Experts Await Postmortem Reports
Dr. Debadutta Kumar, who was on duty at the Kantabanji hospital, stated that Shiva’s family believes he received a tetanus toxoid injection. However, due to the patient’s unfortunate passing, the exact cause of death can only be determined after receiving the postmortem reports. Meanwhile, Kantabanji Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Gouranga Sahu confirmed that Shiva’s family has yet to file a formal complaint. However, an unnatural death case has been registered in relation to the incident.
As investigations continue, the tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by unqualified practitioners in the field of healthcare. Authorities and the public are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals seeking medical assistance.
