The West Coast Berbice (WCB) community was left in shock after the discovery of the lifeless body of 48-year-old Daniele Charles, known as ‘Miss,’ in the backlands of the Experiment New Housing Scheme. The gruesome scene unfolded on Sunday, November 19, 2023, when GuySuCo workers stumbled upon the nude body during their routine motor lorry traverse along the nearby Estate Road.

Charles, who resided in Number 30 Village, was last seen at a bar in Bath Settlement the previous night. She had been enjoying a night out with her relatives and two friends, one male and one female. As the night progressed, Charles’ relatives left the bar, leaving her behind with her friends.

Tragically, it was later revealed that Charles had sustained ten stab wounds on her body. The discovery was made by GuySuCo workers at approximately 12:10 pm on Sunday, prompting them to immediately alert the authorities. The police were quick to arrive at the scene, prompted by an anonymous call made by concerned individuals.

Upon closer examination, the police discovered a multi-coloured blouse with suspected bloodstains, a pair of 3/4 pants, a brassiere, and underwear, which appeared to have been cut open, near the body. Disturbingly, it is believed that Charles was also sexually assaulted. Region Five Police Detectives processed the crime scene meticulously, collecting and sealing all the items found near the body as evidence.

Further examination of the deceased’s body revealed the brutal nature of the attack. Six stab wounds were found on her abdomen, one on the left side breast, two on the throat, and one in the center of her chest. The police have classified this case as a homicide and are actively investigating the matter.

Yeukini Charles, the son of the victim, provided investigators with crucial information. He disclosed that his mother had called him around 3:23 am on Sunday, inquiring about his well-being. However, the call abruptly ended when he expressed concern about her welfare. Subsequent attempts to reach her went unanswered, with all calls being directed to voicemail.

Local residents of the Experiment New Housing Scheme expressed shock and disbelief upon learning about the presence of the woman’s body in the backlands. It was only after the sugar workers raised an alarm that the community became aware of the tragic incident. Residents, eager to find out if the deceased was someone they knew, were taken aback by the grim discovery.

At the Region 5 Police Headquarters in Fort Wellington, several individuals claiming to be relatives and friends of the deceased gathered but declined to provide any information to the media. The tight-lipped behavior of these individuals has raised suspicions and piqued the interest of the investigating authorities.

Daniele Charles worked as a labourer in the Drainage and Irrigation Department at a Neighbourhood Democratic Council, making her a well-known figure in the community. As the police continue their investigation, the body has been transferred to Bailey’s Funeral Parlour, where it awaits a comprehensive autopsy to shed light on the exact cause of death.

The community remains on edge as the search for two persons of interest intensifies. The police are urging anyone with information relating to the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation, as they strive to bring justice to the grieving family and ensure the safety of the community..
