Unidentified Woman Injects Patient with Foreign Substance at Chandigarh’s PGI Hospital, Harmeet Kaur in Critical Condition

In a shocking incident that has left the medical fraternity and authorities in Chandigarh alarmed, an unidentified woman entered the gynecology ward of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Wednesday night and injected a patient with an unknown substance. The police have registered a case of attempted culpable homicide and launched an investigation into the matter.

According to the police, the woman gained access to the ward by posing as a nurse. Her target was a 24-year-old woman named Harmeet Kaur, who had been referred to PGIMER from Banur in Patiala due to her deteriorating health condition. Professor Vanita Suri, the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at PGI, stated that Harmeet is currently in critical condition and is being treated for puerperal sepsis with acute kidney injury in the trauma ICU.

The suspect entered the gynecology ward, where Harmeet was admitted, around 11:30 pm on November 15. After injecting Harmeet, the woman was captured in a hazy picture taken by the victim herself. However, the picture has not been helpful in identifying the suspect or making a breakthrough in the case.

Harmeet’s sister-in-law, Jatinder Kaur, provided a statement to the police, revealing that Harmeet had recently given birth in Banur, Patiala. Due to her worsening condition post-delivery, she was referred to PGI and initially admitted to the ICU before being shifted to the gynecology ward.

The incident occurred when an unknown woman, claiming to be a nurse from the kidney department, entered the gynecology ward. She asserted that a doctor had sent her to administer an injection to Harmeet. However, Harmeet grew suspicious and started questioning the woman about the doctor’s name and her own identity. Faced with questions, the woman became nervous and hastily fled from the ward.

The investigation has faced challenges as the CCTV cameras in Nehru Hospital were found to be non-functional. The police are also examining the background of Harmeet’s family. Inspector Malkit Singh, the Station House Officer of Police Station 11, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. The police have collected Harmeet’s medical records from PGIMER to aid in their probe.

A case has been registered under Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 11 police station. Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the accused responsible for this heinous act. The authorities are taking the incident seriously and ensuring the safety and security of patients within the hospital premises.

The incident has raised concerns about the need for enhanced security measures in healthcare facilities, especially in sensitive areas like maternity wards. The authorities are expected to review the existing protocols and strengthen security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future..
