A festive religious procession turned into a nightmare when a modified bus, driven by a novice 31-year-old driver, lost control and plowed into a crowd of merry villagers in Thailand. The incident, which took place in the Sum Thong village, Nong Hin district, Loei province, resulted in the death of a 52-year-old woman and left numerous others injured.

The local police, led by Police Captain Thongsa Rongchart, received a distress call about a bus hitting a woman during a Kathin procession, a traditional Buddhist ceremony in Thailand. Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of 52-year-old Boonthong under the wheels of the specially modified bus equipped with a sound system. In addition to the fatality, more than ten villagers suffered from various injuries and were crying out in pain.

Emergency services and local volunteers promptly arrived at the scene and transported the victims to Nong Hin Hospital, as reported by KhaoSod.

During the investigation, the bus driver, identified as Saranyu, admitted that it was his first time driving in a Kathin procession. He was following a jubilant crowd of over a hundred villagers from Sum Thong to the Sirithep Samakkee Temple. However, the frequent stopping and starting of the procession caused the bus’s air braking system to exhaust. As a result, the vehicle slipped on a slightly downhill road and crashed into the unsuspecting villagers.

Authorities immediately transported the deceased to the hospital and are now conducting a thorough investigation according to the law.

In related news, another terrifying incident occurred in Nakhon Sawan province, where a crane lorry’s brakes failed, causing the vehicle to veer off and hit a roadside shop, resulting in severe damage. The incident also led to the scalding of a noodle shop owner by boiling water. The driver of the crane lorry insisted that he had not consumed any alcohol prior to the incident.

As road accidents continue to pose a significant threat to public safety in Thailand, it is crucial for drivers to abide by traffic regulations and for authorities to enforce stricter measures to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.
