Third Suicide in Less Than a Year at Disneyland Parking Garage

Another tragic suicide has occurred at a Disneyland parking garage, marking the third such incident in less than a year. The latest suicide took place at the Pixar Pals parking garage, which was closed temporarily as law enforcement officials investigated the scene.

The victim has been identified as Jonah Alexander Edwards, a 24-year-old man, according to the Orange County Register. Anaheim Police were called to the theme park at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, where they discovered Edwards’ lifeless body. The police are treating the incident as a suicide.

The Orange County Coroner’s office confirmed the identity of the deceased. However, Disneyland officials have not released any statements regarding the incident, and the police have not provided any further details.

Following the discovery of the body, visitors whose vehicles were parked in the garage were instructed to wait in the Mickey and Friends parking lot until the garage could be reopened, as reported by the UK’s Daily Mail.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Disneyland has been the site of suicides. In fact, since 2010, there have been a total of six suicides reported at the theme park, with three of them occurring since December 2022. Two of the three recent suicides took place at the Mickey and Friends parking garage.

In February, Marney Schoenfeld, a 46-year-old woman from Scottsdale, Arizona, tragically lost her life at the parking garage. Then, in December, Christopher Christensen, a former elementary school principal facing charges of misdemeanor child endangerment and battery, also jumped to his death.

The alarming frequency of these suicides raises concerns about the safety measures in place at Disneyland parking garages. A Twitter user named Broadcast Rick expressed his frustration, calling for accountability from Disneyland and urging them to implement preventive measures to prevent future suicides.

Unfortunately, suicide rates have been on the rise, not just at Disneyland but nationwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide rates have increased by 36 percent between 2000 and 2021. In 2021 alone, 48,183 deaths were attributed to suicide.

The CDC’s data also reveals that suicidal thoughts are even more prevalent, with an estimated 12.3 million American adults seriously considering suicide in 2021. Out of those, 3.5 million made plans to take their own lives, and 1.7 million attempted suicide. Shockingly, suicide ranks as the second-leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-14 and 20-34.

As the investigation into the recent suicide at the Disneyland parking garage continues, it is crucial to address the underlying mental health issues contributing to these tragedies. Suicide prevention efforts should be strengthened, and mental health support should be made more accessible to those in need.

It is imperative that Disneyland, as a popular tourist destination, takes steps to enhance the safety and security of its visitors. By implementing preventative measures and providing resources for mental health support, Disneyland can play a significant role in preventing future tragedies.
