Accident – Death – Obituary News : Cult-related violence is becoming a major security challenge in Nigeria, particularly in the southern states. The violence has led to the deaths of numerous people, including a senior police officer in the Niger Delta region. Despite the efforts of the police to combat the issue, the violence continues to engulf communities and even force security agencies to withdraw. Investigations have revealed that the willingness of cultists to engage in criminal activities is often linked to the use of hard drugs.

The rise of cultism in secondary schools is another alarming aspect of this issue. In Akwa Ibom state, for example, there has been an increase in cultism fueled by young people indulging in hard drugs. The state’s Anti-Cult Unit was established to combat this problem, but the violence has still claimed the lives of many individuals over the past year. Some notable cases include a 23-year-old who murdered his mother for not giving him money to satisfy his drug addiction and pay his confraternity dues.

Cultism has also infiltrated the basic school system, with children as young as 10 being indoctrinated into these groups. The government has taken measures to address this issue, such as erecting perimeter fencing in schools and banning off-season enrollment to prevent expelled students involved in cultism from returning.

At the University of Uyo, effective investment and management of security by the school’s administration has helped maintain calm on campus. However, the main campus of the Akwa Ibom State University has experienced cult killings, creating fear among students. To address the upsurge in cultism and other forms of criminality, Governor Umo Eno has created a new Ministry of Internal Security headed by a retired general as commissioner.

In Rivers State, most cult groups operate in communities rather than educational institutions. The activities of these groups, particularly factions of the Iceland cult, have led to numerous deaths, including that of a former Divisional Police Officer. These activities have also affected businesses and deterred investors from the area. To combat this issue, security agencies are urged to engage in intelligence and technology-driven policing and earn the trust of the people for timely and useful information.

In Imo State, the incidents of cult-related activities have raised concerns among the government, police, and residents. Recently, a young man was found slaughtered in what appeared to be a cult war, causing panic in the community. The lack of constant police presence and inadequate moral upbringing of children by parents have contributed to the increase in cult activities. Residents, students, and business owners live in fear and are at the mercy of these cult groups.
