According to an official statement issued by the Toronto Police on Saturday evening, officers were alerted to the incident at the Toronto Islamic Center (TIC) near the intersection of Yonge Street and Davenport Road at approximately 6:40 am.

The TIC, as shared by the National Council for Canadian Muslims (NCCM) on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), reported that a man attempted to vandalize the center while hurling Islamophobic slurs and threats towards the worshippers.

The TIC’s statement highlighted the repeated instances of Islamophobia faced by the center, stating, “This is not the first time TIC has faced Islamophobia. We previously received threats that someone was coming to commit another Christchurch attack at our center.”

Undeterred by such acts of hate, the TIC expressed its resolve to stand strong against bigotry and called upon the community to attend prayers as a united front against Islamophobia, antisemitism, and hatred. The NCCM also shared a video of the incident with the Toronto Police.

Additionally, Toronto Police revealed that the suspect, Chandler Marshall, aged 28, has also been charged in connection with two other incidents that took place on Wednesday morning. The first incident occurred before 4:30 am when Marshall was approached by a taxi driver who offered him a ride. Asking if the driver was Muslim, Marshall then sprayed the victim’s face with an unknown substance.

Three and a half hours later, Marshall targeted a woman wearing a hijab, making derogatory statements before spraying her face with an unknown substance. The victim sustained minor physical injuries and received treatment, as reported by City News.

Marshall is now scheduled to appear in a Toronto bail court on Monday morning, facing charges including “four counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of assault, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of mischief, two counts of administering a noxious substance, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, two counts of weapons dangerous, and uttering threats.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by religious communities in combating hate crimes. The Toronto Islamic Center’s message emphasizes the importance of long-term change and the collective effort required to eradicate all forms of hatred from society.
