The suspects, identified as V Thennarasu (28), M Kumar alias Elavarasan (33), K Ajith alias Chinna Thinni (20), and T Prabakaran (20), all residents of Sellur in Madurai, were taken into custody by the authorities.

The incident came to light on Friday morning when the lifeless body of Ramkumar was discovered near Meenakshi Nagar fifth street in Samayanallur. According to sources, Ramkumar was allegedly involved in the illegal sale of Tasmac liquor. It is believed that he would stock Tasmac liquor bottles and sell them at inflated prices when they were unavailable at the official stores. On November 16, the suspects had visited the locality to attend a funeral. Later that night, they consumed alcohol and approached Ramkumar to purchase more. However, when Ramkumar learned that Thennarasu and Kumar intended to obtain the bottles for free, he refused to comply. This led to a heated argument, escalating into a physical altercation, during which the suspects fatally stabbed Ramkumar.

The authorities acted swiftly, arresting the perpetrators on Saturday. It is worth noting that, apart from Thennarasu, the other three suspects had previous criminal cases pending against them. Following their apprehension, the Samayanallur police promptly remanded them in judicial custody.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers associated with the illegal liquor trade and highlights the need for stricter regulations to curb such activities. The authorities must remain vigilant in their efforts to crack down on the sale and distribution of illicit substances, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.

It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to work hand in hand with local communities to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the illegal liquor trade. By establishing strong lines of communication and fostering trust, both authorities and residents can collaborate effectively to eliminate this menace from society.
