MUMBAI: In the early hours of Thursday, a devastating motorcycle accident on the Dattaji Nalawade bridge near Pheonix Tower in Lower Parel resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man, while his friend sustained severe injuries. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the duo may have been engaged in a reckless race when the incident occurred. The N M Joshi Marg police department reported that the incident occurred around 3:30 am on Thursday, as relayed by Subodh Kumar Ramnarayan Singh, a 37-year-old tourist taxi driver employed with Akbar Travels. Singh recounted, “I was traveling from Mumbai Central towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after dropping off a passenger. When I reached the Dattaji Nalawade bridge, I noticed a motorcyclist racing towards south Mumbai on a high-speed KTM bike. Unfortunately, the biker lost control, crashed into the road divider, and collided head-on with my vehicle. Fortunately, the airbags deployed just in time, and I managed to escape with only minor scratches.”

Singh further explained that the impact of the collision caused his vehicle’s engine to jam, resulting in significant damage to the bonnet. “One of the bikers fell towards the right side of my car, while the other tragically plummeted off the bridge. Realizing the severity of the situation, I immediately dialed emergency services and reported the incident to the police,” Singh added.

Prompt action was taken by Singh and other witnesses, who swiftly transported the fallen rider, later identified as Usman Faizan Khan, a 24-year-old resident of Bharat Nagar in Worli, to KEM Hospital in a taxi. Tragically, despite their efforts, Khan was declared dead upon arrival by the doctors at the civic hospital. Meanwhile, the police located the second individual, identified as Alpesh Santosh Jadhav, a 25-year-old pillion rider, on Dr E Moses Road at Worli Naka. Jadhav was immediately rushed to BYL Nair Hospital, where he is currently receiving critical medical treatment.

“We suspect that the two individuals were engaged in a race, as there were additional bikers who fled the scene following the accident,” stated a police officer familiar with the case. Based on the complaint lodged by the taxi driver, Khan has been charged under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304A (causing death by negligence), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
