Accident – Death – Obituary News : SHAWNEE, Kan. (WDAF) – The Johnson County Library in Shawnee recently received a package that contained more than just a book – it also included a heartfelt letter from a Delta Air Lines pilot. The act of kindness has touched the hearts of library staff and has become a heartwarming story of connection and generosity.

The package arrived at the library on October 30, and the staff immediately noticed something unusual about it. Inside was a children’s book, along with a letter written by a pilot named Capt. Ben. In the letter, Capt. Ben explained that he found the book at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while he was on his way home to Florida. He took the time to look up the library using the barcode and sent the book back in the mail.

But what truly stood out was Capt. Ben’s offer to pay for any late fees associated with the book. He expressed his belief that nobody should be penalized for enriching their life with a book, showing his genuine care for the library and its patrons.

Branch manager Anna Madrigal expressed her appreciation for the pilot’s gesture, stating, “It connects exactly to the kind of thing that we want to help build in our community. It’s just a really cool relationship piece that a stranger just decided to do that. I’m going to remember this for quite a while.”

Fortunately, the book wasn’t overdue yet, and the Johnson County Library has actually eliminated late fees earlier this year. The library’s decision to eliminate late fees and forgive unpaid fines has been a positive change for their patrons, allowing them to access and enjoy books without the worry of financial penalties.

In addition to the book and letter, Capt. Ben also included some Delta pilot wings and trading cards for kids in his package. This thoughtful gesture further demonstrates his kindness and generosity.

The library took to Facebook to express their gratitude to Capt. Ben, writing, “Ben, if you see this, we think you’re pretty awesome. Come say hello if you ever find yourself in our neck of the woods!”

This heartwarming story reminds us of the power of kindness and the impact one person can have on a community. Capt. Ben’s selfless act has not only brought joy to the Johnson County Library but has also inspired others to spread kindness in their own ways. It serves as a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.

As the library continues to serve its community, they hope that this story will inspire others to share the love of reading and continue to build connections and relationships, just like Capt. Ben did with his unexpected package..
