Tragic Accident Claims Three Lives on NH-55 in Angul

ANGUL: A horrific accident on NH-55 at Bairagipalli within Kishore Nagar police limits in the early hours of Friday has claimed the lives of three individuals, leaving another critically injured. The incident occurred when a speeding truck ran over them as they were fixing a punctured tyre of a passenger bus parked on the highway. The mishap took place around 2 am, approximately 60 km away from Angul.
According to reports, the deceased have been identified as Ghanasyam Barik, the bus driver from Brajrajnagar, and two passengers, Anand Pradhan from Sundargarh, and Nayan Naik from Laikera. The injured individual is Trilochan Nayak, the bus helper from Athagarh.
As Ghanasyam, Anand, and Nayan were attending to the flat tyre, a truck traveling from Sambalpur to Cuttack collided with them. The impact of the collision resulted in the immediate deaths of the three victims, while Trilochan sustained severe injuries. Shockingly, the truck fled the scene after the accident.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Kishore Nagar police arrived at the accident site promptly and rushed Trilochan, the injured helper, to Rairakhol hospital. Due to the worsening condition of Nayan, he was later transferred to VIMSAR in Burla, Sambalpur. The bodies of the three deceased were sent to Rairakhol hospital for postmortem examination.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Balkrishna Kuanr of Athamallik stated that a case has been registered at Kishore Nagar police station in connection with the accident. The authorities are currently making efforts to identify the truck responsible for the tragic incident. Police are meticulously reviewing the footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the area, and it is expected that the truck will be identified soon. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Sources said passenger bus ‘Prachi’ was enroute to Bhubaneswar from Jharsuguda. There were around 50 passengers in the sleeper coach. When the bus reached Bairagipalli at around 2 am, its front wheel got punctured. Driver Ghanasyam and Trilochan alighted from the bus and sought the help of passengers Anand and Nayan to repair the flat tyre.
When they were fixing the tyre, a speeding truck enroute to Cuttack from Sambalpur rammed into them. While Ghanasyam, Anand and Nayan were killed on the spot, Trilochan suffered grievous injuries. The truck sped away after the mishap.
On being informed, Kishore Nagar police reached the accident site and rushed the injured helper to Rairakhol hospital. Nayan was later shifted to VIMSAR, Burla in Sambalpur after his condition deteriorated. The three bodies were sent to Rairakhol hospital for postmortem.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Athamallik Balkrishna Kuanr said a case has been registered in Kishore Nagar police station in this connection. Efforts are underway to identify the truck which caused the accident. Police are scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area and the truck will be identified soon.
