A man from Seymour was apprehended on Thursday evening after attempting to escape from Columbus police officers who were conducting an investigation into a shoplifting incident.
At around 6 p.m., officers from the Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a report of a shoplifting suspect inside Menards, located at 2315 Merchants Mile. According to Lt. Matt Harris, spokesperson for the Columbus Police Department, the suspect was identified as Daniel R. Mason, a 34-year-old resident of Seymour. Harris revealed that Mason was also involved in a shoplifting incident at the same store the previous day. When the officers approached Mason, he immediately started running, disregarding their commands to stop. As he fled, Mason dropped the stolen merchandise next to a parked vehicle before continuing to run towards the east. He was eventually apprehended outside a nearby business.
During a search of Mason’s clothing, the officers discovered a small bag of methamphetamine and a small quantity of marijuana, said Harris. Additionally, the officers confirmed the existence of a warrant issued by Jackson County for Mason’s arrest.
Following his arrest, Mason was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for jail clearance before being remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, theft with a prior conviction, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and the Jackson County warrant.
Mason is currently being held without bond at the Bartholomew County Jail, as stated by jail officials.
