In a tragic incident, a Garud Commando of the Indian Air Force (IAF) reportedly shot himself with his service pistol while on duty at the Air Force Station near Bhuj in Gujarat’s Kutch district. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 16, according to the police.

The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Yogeshkumar Mahato, a native of Jharkhand. Preliminary investigations suggest that Mahato took this extreme step due to financial stress and personal reasons, including the deteriorating health of his mother who resides in Jharkhand. Mahato was serving in the Garud Commando Force unit of the IAF at Bhuj Airforce Station.

The Garud Commando Force is a specialized unit of the IAF responsible for safeguarding critical air force bases and installations, as well as conducting search and rescue operations, counter-terrorism missions, and hostage rescues.

According to the police’s accidental death report, Mahato shot himself in the head with his pistol during his night duty at the Bhuj Air Force Station. His senior officer, Mahendra Pratap Singh, immediately rushed him to GK General Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead upon arrival in the morning.

Singh revealed that Mahato held the rank of an LAC or ‘Leading Aircraftsman’ and was an integral part of the IAF’s special forces unit.
