In a tragic incident, a ‘Garud Commando’ of the Indian Air Force (IAF) reportedly took his own life by shooting himself with his service pistol while on duty at the Air Force Station near Bhuj in Gujarat’s Kutch district. The incident took place in the early hours of November 16 when the deceased, identified as 23-year-old Yogeshkumar Mahato, was posted on night duty.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Mahato ended his life due to financial stress and other personal reasons. Sub-inspector of Bhuj ‘A’ Division police station, D J Thakor, stated that Mahato, a native of Jharkhand, was serving in the Garud Commando Force unit of the IAF at Bhuj Air Force Station. He had been facing financial issues and was also under stress due to his mother’s deteriorating health in Jharkhand.

The Garud Commando Force is the special forces unit of the IAF responsible for protecting critical air force bases and installations, conducting search and rescue missions, counter-terrorism operations, and hostage rescues.

According to the accidental death report filed by the police, Mahato shot himself in the head with his pistol during his night duty at the Bhuj Air Force Station. Upon learning about the incident, his senior officer, Mahendra Pratap Singh, rushed him to GK General Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared Mahato dead in the morning.

Mahendra Pratap Singh informed the police that Mahato held the rank of a Leading Aircraftsman (LAC) and was part of the special forces unit of the IAF.

The tragic incident has left the Air Force community in shock and mourning. The IAF authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances leading to Mahato’s suicide.
