Kaieteur News – A drunk driver, who was apprehended late on Thursday night after allegedly causing the death of a policewoman and critically injuring her colleague by driving through a roadblock outside the Beterverwagting Police Station on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), had been charged eight years ago for causing death by dangerous driving.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old Fitzroy Aulder, had previously faced a similar charge in 2015. During the trial, Aulder’s lawyer had argued that the man he had fatally struck, Romel Junor, was responsible for his own demise due to his intoxicated state. The lawyer claimed that Junor had been drunk when he was hit by Aulder’s vehicle on Durban Street in the city. Ultimately, Aulder was cleared of the charge after the magistrate found him not guilty.

In a tragic turn of events, Aulder once again made headlines around 10:00 pm on Thursday when he ran a red traffic light outside the Beterverwating Police Station while driving a Jeep with registration number PVV 8278. His vehicle collided with two police women, killing one instantly and leaving the other in critical condition.

Following a breathalyzer test conducted by the police, it was determined that Aulder’s blood alcohol level was 67 percent, well above the legal limit.

The deceased police woman has been identified as Constable Annette Abel, while her injured colleague is Inspector Shenay Castello.

According to the police, Castello and Abel, along with other officers, were conducting traffic duties at a roadblock in front of the Beterverwagting Police Station when the tragic incident occurred.

Castello was reportedly in charge of the roadblock, with Abel, Corporal Keshan Collins, Lance Corporal Jenella Jonas, Constable Brian Tappin, and Constable Wayne Daniels assisting her.

Abel had just pulled over two vehicles for a routine traffic stop when Aulder ran the red light at the junction of Republic Drive and the public road.

Aulder knocked down a line of traffic cones set up at the roadblock before colliding with the two women. Abel was pinned to one of the cars she had pulled over, while Aulder’s jeep overturned, causing injuries to him and his passengers.

In the ensuing collision, the car Abel was pinned to crashed into another vehicle she had pulled over. This second vehicle also struck one of the drivers, Inspector Castello, and other officers.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and Constable Abel was pronounced dead on arrival. The injured parties were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and Aulder was promptly arrested.

It is worth noting that Aulder had previously faced a charge in 2015 for recklessly driving a minibus and causing the death of Junor. During that trial, his lawyer repeatedly argued that Junor was responsible for his own death due to his intoxicated state. Aulder claimed that the pedestrian had walked into his path.

Witnesses testified that Junor had indeed left a bar in a drunken state just moments before the fatal accident.

The investigation into the recent accident is ongoing, and Aulder will face legal consequences for his actions. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by drunk driving and highlights the need for stricter enforcement and education regarding road safety..
