Parts of Meriden, a town in Connecticut, were closed off on Friday following an incident where a man allegedly hit and threatened a neighbor before barricading himself in his apartment. The local police department issued an emergency alert in response to the situation.

According to the Meriden Police Department, officers were called to a residence on Pleasant Street at 3:10 p.m. The incident involved a man residing in the house who reportedly brandished a knife and threatened his neighbor. Furthermore, it was discovered that the suspect had also assaulted the same neighbor using a metal pipe in the shared hallway of their apartment building.

The police identified the suspect as Angelo Maggio, a 61-year-old individual who had retreated to his own apartment after the altercation. Due to Maggio’s ownership of firearms, law enforcement deemed it necessary to take precautions. Consequently, a reverse 911 message was sent to residents in the immediate vicinity, and a perimeter was established, resulting in the closure of Pleasant Street to traffic.

Police negotiators engaged in telephone conversation with the suspect, ultimately leading to a peaceful resolution of the situation. Despite the lack of immediate threat posed by Maggio to the community, the Meriden police decided to issue the emergency alert as a precautionary measure.

In an official statement, the Meriden police emphasized their commitment to prioritizing the safety of their citizens. They stated, “At no time did we feel that anyone was in immediate danger; however, we will never fail to take the appropriate steps to ensure that the safety of our citizens is our first priority.”
