Pregnant Woman Fatally Wounded in Kansas City Mall Shooting

KANSAS CITY — Tragedy struck the Kansas City area on November 10 when a pregnant woman, identified as 19-year-old Karla Brown, succumbed to her injuries sustained in a shooting incident at the Independence Center Mall.

The heartbreaking news of Brown’s passing was confirmed through an online fundraiser created to support her family during this difficult time.

According to court records, the incident unfolded when law enforcement officers responded to reports of a shooting at the mall. The first officer to arrive at the scene, who happened to be off-duty and assigned to Dillards, discovered three victims with gunshot wounds. Among them was Brown, who was critically injured and tragically, was also pregnant at the time.

Surveillance footage revealed that a group, which included the gravely wounded woman, encountered another group, with 21-year-old MarkAnthony Geer identified as a suspect. The two groups crossed paths near the mall entrance, leading to a verbal altercation. During the confrontation, an innocent bystander from neither group was shot in the leg. The second group fled to the parking lot, leaving Brown behind. Witnesses reported that she was sitting on a bench approximately 30 feet away from the altercation. They identified Geer or a man resembling him as the shooter.

The devastating turn of events has left the community in shock, prompting an outpouring of support for Brown’s family. An online fundraiser has been set up to help alleviate the financial burden they now face in the wake of this tragedy.

Currently, Geer is in custody in Jackson County, facing charges that include three counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and three counts of Armed Criminal Action. Prosecutors are anticipated to bring forward additional charges as the investigation continues.
