According to SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens, Doig and his two colleagues, Sergeant Michael Hutchinson and Constable Rebekah Cass, were called to the property after reports that 26-year-old Jaydn Stimson had shot the family dog. Tragically, upon arrival, Doig was fatally wounded by the occupant and died at the scene. Hutchinson also sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds and was airlifted to Adelaide for treatment, while Cass escaped unharmed.

Commissioner Stevens stated that there was no prior indication that this call-out posed a high risk to the officers. He described the incident as “incredibly tragic” for both SA Police and the community. Doig, who served as the officer in charge at Lucindale Police Station in the state’s southeast, was a dedicated career police officer who was highly respected by his peers. Locals remember him as the epitome of a small-town cop, always looking out for everyone and willing to lend a helping hand.
