A devastating incident occurred on Tuesday evening near the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg campus in Hempfield Township, as a female student was struck by a car, according to state police. The accident took place near the front entrance of the Pitt-Greensburg campus at the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road and Finoli Drive, shortly after 5:30 p.m.

The 18-year-old student, identified as Audrey Fruehauf from Ligonier, was immediately airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital, where she remains in serious condition as of Wednesday, according to police reports. The details of the accident were revealed in a police report issued the following day. It stated that Fruehauf had pressed the crosswalk button at the intersection of Finoli Drive with Mt. Pleasant Road. While patiently waiting at the crosswalk, she exchanged a friendly wave with two individuals before proceeding into the crosswalk.

Tragically, a Chevrolet van traveling southbound on M. Pleasant Road, with a solid green light, collided with Fruehauf. The driver, identified as 70-year-old James B. Freeman from Greensburg, remained at the scene following the incident. Fortunately, Freeman is not currently facing any charges related to the accident.

The news of the accident spread quickly among students, and the shock and concern were palpable. Abby Copeland, a fellow student, expressed her reaction, saying, “I was walking down to class, and there was a bunch of police cars everywhere, and we kind of assumed that there was an accident that happened, and then I got into class, and we later found out that it was a student pedestrian that was crossing the street that was hit by a car.”

The aftermath of the accident required extensive crash reconstruction efforts, which lasted for several hours. The University of Pittsburgh issued a statement in response to the incident, indicating that the student’s parents had been notified, and counseling and Residence Life staff were available to support students during this difficult time.

Copeland also conveyed her empathy for the victim and her family, acknowledging that the accident occurred in an area heavily frequented by students. She remarked, “My heart breaks for whoever that person is and that family, but that is a very highly walked spot for a lot of students, so it could’ve been anyone.”

It is important to note that an earlier version of the story erroneously stated that Freeman would face charges in relation to the incident. However, it has been clarified that he is not currently facing any charges.
