Kolkata: A man lost his life under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday after being called to West Bengal’s Amherst Street police station in connection with a mobile phone theft case. However, the family of the deceased alleges that he was subjected to torture, leading to his tragic demise.

The unfortunate incident took place in Kolkata, where the man suddenly collapsed while at the police station. He was immediately rushed to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital but was declared “brought dead” upon arrival. The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar Singh, a native of Bihar who resided on Patuatola Lane in Kolkata.

Following Singh’s untimely death, his grieving family members gathered outside the Amherst Street police station to protest against what they claim to be a case of custodial death. The demonstration caused a blockade on College Street, disrupting road traffic for approximately an hour. The family firmly accused the police of being responsible for Singh’s demise.

In response to the escalating situation, a substantial police contingent was dispatched to the scene. After providing assurances of a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Singh’s death, the authorities managed to convince the protesters to lift the blockade.

One of Singh’s relatives recounted, “He was summoned by the police and instructed to bring along the phone he was allegedly using. He entered the premises of Amherst Street police station while my wife, who is his niece, waited outside.” “After some time, we found him lying on the floor, blood oozing out of his nose. He was unresponsive, and when we rushed him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” the relative stated.

Contrary to the family’s allegations, the police denied any physical assault taking place within the police station. They claimed that Singh experienced a sudden seizure, leading to his collapse on the floor.

A senior officer from the Kolkata Police said, “There was no incident of assault. He suffered a sudden seizure and collapsed on the ground.” The officer further added, “However, we will thoroughly investigate the matter and review the CCTV footage. We are also awaiting the post-mortem examination report to ensure that the deceased had no underlying health conditions that could have contributed to his demise,” he informed PTI.

In response to the family’s concerns and allegations, they have lodged a formal complaint with the Amherst Street police station.
