Udupi murder of four of family: Accused Praveen Arun Chougule arrested in Belagavi; motive still a mystery

Authorities have made a breakthrough in the tragic case of a family of four who were brutally stabbed to death in Tripti Nagar, Udupi taluk. The accused, identified as 35-year-old Praveen Arun Chougule, was apprehended in Kudachi town of Raibag taluk on Tuesday night in a joint operation by Belagavi and Udupi police. The motive behind the murders remains unclear.

Following the arrest, the accused was transported to Udupi on Wednesday morning and is currently being questioned at an undisclosed location. The police are determined to uncover the motive behind this heinous crime and are interrogating the suspect extensively. Additionally, they plan to seek custody of the accused for further investigation.

Praveen Arun Chougule had been hiding at a relative’s residence in Kudachi, Belagavi district, prior to his arrest. The accused allegedly stabbed Haseena (46) and her three children, Afnan (23), Aynaz (21), and Assem (12), to death at their residence on Sunday, November 12, before fleeing the scene. Hajira (70) also sustained injuries but has since been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.

The devastating incident unfolded while Haseena’s husband was working in Dubai. He was informed of the tragedy on Sunday. The police are working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the murders and determine the exact motive.

Investigation into the Udupi Murders

The interrogations of Praveen Arun Chougule are crucial in shedding light on the motive behind this gruesome crime. Both the accused and Aynaz, one of the deceased, had been employed as cabin crew members for Air India in Mangaluru. Police sources indicate that investigators are exploring various angles, including the possibility of one-sided love or personal enmity.

It is believed that the accused specifically targeted Aynaz but ended up taking the lives of four innocent people in broad daylight. The Malpe Police Station has registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the case. To aid in the swift apprehension of the suspect, five special teams were formed by the police.
