Tragic Crash in Ohio Leaves Six Dead and 18 Injured

ETNA, Ohio (AP) — In a devastating accident on Tuesday morning, a charter bus carrying high school students from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District in eastern Ohio was rear-ended by a semitruck on an Ohio highway. The collision involved a total of five vehicles and resulted in the tragic deaths of six individuals, with 18 others sustaining injuries.

Licking County Emergency Management Agency Director Sean Grady confirmed that the crash occurred on Interstate 70 in Licking County, approximately 26 miles east of Columbus. The Pioneer Trails charter bus, which was transporting 54 students and chaperones, was part of a convoy en route to the Ohio School Boards Association conference in Columbus.

Tragically, three passengers on the bus, identified as John W. Mosely, 18, of Mineral City; Jeffery D. Worrell, 18, of Bolivar; and Katelyn N. Owens, 15, of Mineral City, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his condolences during a news conference, stating, “This is our worst nightmare when we have a bus full of children involved in a crash. Prayers go out to the families, everyone who was on the bus.”

A total of 15 students and the bus driver were transported to hospitals for medical treatment, while other students were taken to a reunification site. Additionally, three individuals from one of the passenger vehicles involved in the crash were also pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Dave Kennat, 56, of Navarre; Kristy Gaynor, 39, of Zoar; and Shannon Wigfield, 45, of Bolivar. The driver of the other passenger vehicle was also hospitalized.

The chain-reaction crash, which caused several vehicles to catch fire, has left the authorities searching for answers regarding its cause. The Ohio State Highway Patrol revealed that a team of National Transportation Safety Board investigators has been dispatched to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.

The tragic incident has prompted the cancellation of the Ohio School Boards Association conference in Columbus. Spokesperson Jeff Chambers expressed the organization’s deep sorrow upon learning of the crash.
