Upon their arrival at the scene, the officers gathered information and learned that two other individuals were injured inside the home with the suspect. The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Ahmed Mohamed Nassar. Before the officers entered the home, a third victim managed to escape and was found by officers and Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) medics in the neighborhood. She informed the police that Ahmed Nassar was still armed with a knife and posed a threat. She was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Based on the information provided by the victim who escaped, the patrol officers decided to make an emergency forced entry into the home to rescue the other two injured victims. Prior to entering, the officers announced their presence and identified themselves as Austin police officers. However, as they entered the home at approximately 3:01 a.m., they were fired upon by Ahmed Nassar. The officers did not return fire and quickly retreated from the premises.

As they entered a back bedroom, Ahmed Nassar opened fire on them, prompting the SWAT officers to return fire in self-defense, as reported by APD.

During the exchange of gunfire, at around 4:15 a.m., it was announced over police radio that two officers had been shot. The injured officers were swiftly moved to safety by their fellow officers and ATCEMS tactical medics, who immediately began rendering aid. The officers were then transported to Dell Seton Medical Center, where Senior Officer Jorge Pastore was sadly pronounced dead. The second officer, who remains unidentified, underwent surgery for his injuries and has since been released.
