MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shocking incident unfolded in Memphis on Tuesday morning when a routine traffic stop took a violent turn. Court records reveal that a man is now facing multiple charges after biting off a portion of an officer’s ear during the altercation.

The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m., when an officer initiated a minor traffic stop involving a 2002 Ford F150. As the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed the driver, later identified as Marcus R. Johnson, drop a brown leather pouch onto the ground outside the truck.

Upon providing identification information that returned as female, the officer attempted to detain Johnson, leading to a physical confrontation. According to the affidavit, Johnson launched a vicious attack on the officer, using a chokehold to strangle him and biting off a piece of the officer’s right ear. The assault continued as Johnson repeatedly punched the officer in the face and chest area, eventually overpowering him and seizing both the officer’s service weapon and taser.

Fortunately, the officer managed to regain control, apprehending Johnson and recovering his service weapon. Both individuals were then transported to Baptist East hospital for medical treatment.

During a subsequent search, another officer discovered the discarded leather pouch along with a clear plastic wrapper containing various drugs, including fentanyl, marijuana, and ecstasy. The investigation also revealed that Johnson’s license had been revoked, and he failed to provide proof of insurance.

As a result, Johnson now faces a slew of charges, including attempted second-degree murder, resisting official detention, criminal impersonation, possession of controlled substances with the intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell (four counts), simple possession or casual exchange, driving with a suspended/revoked/canceled license, financial responsibility violation, and violation of vehicle registration law. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, November 16.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers during routine encounters. It also highlights the need for increased vigilance and precautions to ensure the safety of those who serve and protect our communities.
