November 14, London—In a shocking incident, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is currently on the lookout for a 17-year-old boy, Jan Lopez-Sanchez, who allegedly shot and critically injured his 17-year-old girlfriend. The incident has left the community in disbelief and has sparked concerns about the rising youth violence in the area.

According to APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos, once apprehended, Lopez-Sanchez will face a string of serious charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, criminal damage to property, unlawful possession of a firearm, and negligent use of a deadly weapon. Authorities are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensure the safety of the community.

Gallegos provided details of the incident, stating that on the night of November 5, the victim was sitting inside a blue Dodge car parked in front of her residence on the West Side. Accompanying her was another male teenager with whom she had an on-and-off dating relationship for approximately a year. However, the tranquility of the evening was abruptly shattered when the victim started receiving incessant phone calls from a boy she referred to as a friend.

Sensing trouble, she urged the boy in the Dodge to drive away. But before they could make their escape, a white/pearl Cadillac pulled up adjacent to their vehicle. Realizing the imminent danger, she implored her companion to flee, but the driver of the Cadillac, later identified as Lopez-Sanchez, opened fire on the Dodge. Shockingly, Lopez-Sanchez, who had some form of relationship, be it a friendship or romantic involvement, with the victim, according to her parents, relentlessly pursued them and continued firing shots.

The driver of the Dodge, in his statement to the police, disclosed that the girl had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. In a desperate attempt to protect themselves, he retaliated by returning fire at the assailants in the Cadillac before ultimately seeking refuge in an unfamiliar backyard on a dead-end street.

The gravely wounded girl was swiftly transported to a local hospital, where she currently remains in critical condition as of Tuesday evening. Medical professionals are working around the clock to provide her with the best possible care and to stabilize her condition.

In the wake of the incident, APD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives swiftly obtained an arrest warrant for Jan Lopez-Sanchez. The police department is urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. The safety and well-being of the community heavily rely on the cooperation of the public.

As the search for Lopez-Sanchez intensifies, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address youth violence and ensure that young individuals have access to the necessary resources and guidance to lead productive and non-violent lives. The Albuquerque community is left grappling with the shock of this senseless act of violence, hoping for justice to be served and for the victim’s swift recovery.
