Luu Binh Nhuong, the deputy head of the Commission on People’s Aspirations under Vietnam’s National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee, has been arrested and charged with allegedly extorting assets, according to investigators from the Department of Public Security in Thai Binh Province. The arrest followed an expanded investigation into another individual involved in illicit activities.

On Tuesday, investigators from the Department of Public Security in Thai Binh Province, northern Vietnam, apprehended Luu Binh Nhuong, a prominent figure in Vietnamese politics. Nhuong, who held the position of deputy head of the Commission on People’s Aspirations under the National Assembly Standing Committee, now faces charges of extorting assets.

The arrest came as part of an ongoing investigation into Pham Minh Cuong, a resident of Thai Thuy District in Thai Binh Province. Cuong, who has a history of criminal convictions, was found to be involved in extortion activities targeting sand-mining firms in the region. During the search and arrest process, investigators discovered various objects and documents that indicated potential violations of regulations.

To facilitate their investigation, the police executed search warrants for Nhuong’s house and workplace in Hanoi. These warrants had been approved by the Thai Binh Province People’s Procuracy, signifying the seriousness of the allegations against Nhuong.

Luu Binh Nhuong, 60, hails from Hung Ha District in Thai Binh Province. He previously served as an NA deputy in the Ben Tre Province delegate group during the 2016-21 tenure. Additionally, Nhuong was a member of the NA Committee for Social Affairs during the same period. With a doctorate in law, he held the position of deputy dean of the economic law faculty at Hanoi Law University and lectured there for over two decades.

Apart from his role in the National Assembly, Nhuong also served as the vice-president of the Vietnam-Switzerland Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group. However, he is not currently an NA deputy in the ongoing 2021-26 term.

The case involving Luu Binh Nhuong and Pham Minh Cuong is under further investigation, with the police forces committed to uncovering the full extent of their alleged involvement in illicit activities.
