Austin police have recently uncovered a report from 2015 that detailed possible suspicious activity linked to the man responsible for the shooting incident that resulted in the death of an Austin police officer on Saturday. However, authorities found no evidence to suggest criminal involvement or justify long-term surveillance of the suspect, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The revelation comes amidst an extensive investigation led by multiple Austin police divisions and the FBI, who were called in to assist due to the complexity of the crime scene. During the investigation, officers discovered a cache of weapons and body armor in the suspect’s residence on Bernoulli Drive.

According to investigators, the police received a vague and nonspecific report in 2015 about an unidentified man residing on the same South Austin street. The report indicated that the individual was frequently engaged in physical training exercises, leading the caller to suggest a potential link to terrorism.

Authorities have now identified the man in question as Ahmed Mohamed Nassar, who fatally shot SWAT officer Jorge Pastore early Saturday morning. The incident occurred when Pastore and fellow officers attempted to enter Nassar’s residence, where he was allegedly attacking family members.

Sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that the 2015 report was forwarded to the Austin Regional Intelligence Center for further investigation. However, specific details regarding the police response and subsequent investigative steps were expunged from the records to comply with federal guidelines governing intelligence centers funded by the government.

These guidelines, established by the U.S. Justice Department, dictate that information lacking evidence of criminal activity be purged after a period of five years. As a result, the 2015 report on Nassar’s suspicious activities was no longer accessible.

Contrary to earlier reports and statements from the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, federal and local investigators have found no evidence to suggest that Nassar was on an FBI watch list.

The shooting incident unfolded when police responded to a 911 call reporting a stabbing at the Bernoulli Drive residence. Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire, prompting them to withdraw. SWAT officers were subsequently called to the scene and attempted entry into the house, resulting in the exchange of gunfire that claimed Officer Pastore’s life. Another officer, who remains unidentified, was also injured in the incident but has since been released from the hospital.

As the investigation continues to unfold, colleagues of Officer Pastore are making preparations for his memorial service, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday at Circuit of the Americas. The service is expected to draw thousands of mourners and fellow officers from across the state and nation.

Officer Jorge Pastore’s tragic death marks the first line-of-duty shooting incident resulting in an Austin police officer’s death in over a decade.
