Volusia County, UK – In a bizarre turn of events, two individuals were apprehended over the weekend after boldly asserting that the laws do not apply to them. These self-proclaimed sovereign citizens, who have a history of challenging authority, were taken into custody by local authorities.

The incident unfolded when deputies in Volusia County noticed a peculiar license plate on a vehicle and decided to initiate a routine traffic stop. Bodycam footage revealed the driver engaging in a conversation with a woman over the phone while handing the deputy a stack of papers instead of a valid driver’s license.

Interestingly, as the initial suspect, identified as Destry Wogerman, was being arrested and placed in handcuffs, the woman he was conversing with arrived at the scene. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in the woman’s car window being shattered and her subsequent arrest. She was later identified as Laralynne Nabozny.

This episode is not unfamiliar to law enforcement officials, who have encountered numerous encounters with individuals who identify as sovereign citizens. These individuals often present various justifications for their belief in exemption from the law. Attorney Michael Panella, well-versed in such cases, shared his insights on the matter.

Panella highlighted one common argument frequently used by sovereign citizens, stating, “For example, a favorite one is, ‘I’m not driving, I’m traveling,’ which is sort of what came up in this case. And therefore, because I’m traveling based on the privileges and immunities clause of the constitution.”

However, Panella emphasized that despite the diversity of beliefs among sovereign citizens, he has never witnessed them successfully evading legal consequences. “I’ve never seen it work because, at the end of the day, you’re still going to be brought in front of a judge, and now you’re just basically making the judge mad,” Panella cautioned. He recalled an incident where an individual even resorted to physical violence by overturning a council table during a courtroom hearing.

As a result of their defiant actions, Destry Wogerman was arrested for driving without a license and operating a registered vehicle. Both Wogerman and Laralynne Nabozny faced additional charges of resisting deputies.

While the concept of sovereign citizens continues to perplex and challenge authorities, it is evident that their attempts to circumvent the law have been consistently unsuccessful.
