Suspect Fatally Shot by San Antonio Police During Confrontation

San Antonio police have made public the body camera footage capturing the fatal shooting of an armed suspect during a confrontation with officers.

The incident took place on October 17th at approximately 5 a.m. on Gus Garcia Street, near Colima Street, just west of downtown San Antonio.

According to authorities, two police officers noticed a vehicle with expired registration and attempted to perform a routine traffic stop.

The vehicle, however, slowly drove away from the officers and eventually turned into a residential neighborhood.

As seen in the body camera footage, both the driver and a passenger exited the vehicle and started running away from the pursuing officers.

While the officers managed to apprehend Brittany Legree, a 27-year-old female, the other suspect, identified as 18-year-old Richard Rodriguez, continued to flee through the residential area.

During the chase, officers noticed that Rodriguez was armed with a firearm.

In the video, one of the officers can be heard shouting “gun!” while drawing his pistol and pointing it at Rodriguez as they continued their pursuit.

Despite repeated commands from the officers to drop his weapon, Rodriguez attempted to evade capture by jumping over a fence.

Ultimately, Rodriguez sought refuge in a residence on Gus Garcia Street. It was at this point that he turned towards the officers and raised his weapon.

SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso stated, “Officers in the front of the home on Gus Garcia saw the suspect turn towards them and raise the gun at them. These officers then pointed their weapons at the suspect and shot multiple rounds, striking the suspect.”

The body camera footage captures multiple gunshots, and an officer can be heard yelling, “Stop reaching for it!” indicating that Rodriguez continued to reach for his weapon.

Despite immediate life-saving measures, Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as confirmed by the San Antonio Police Department.

During a subsequent search, authorities discovered a second firearm concealed in Rodriguez’s waistband.

The District Attorney’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
