Woman Arrested for Breaking and Entering and Larceny in Morganton

Arrest Made in Connection to Burglary and Theft
In a recent development, 57-year-old Deborah Chapman Hallyburton, a resident of South Sterling Street in Morganton, has been apprehended by Morganton Public Safety Officers. Hallyburton faces serious charges, including felony counts of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and a misdemeanor charge of damage to personal property. These charges are related to the theft of various items from a neighboring residence.
Incident Report and Police Response
On Tuesday, November 14, at approximately 1 p.m., Morganton Public Safety Officers promptly responded to a reported break-in and larceny at an address on South Sterling Street. After gathering information from the victims, law enforcement officials were able to compile a comprehensive list of the stolen items. Interestingly, one of the victims observed a woman discarding trash in a bin that resembled the box that had been stolen.
Discovering the Stolen Items
Seizing the opportunity, the victim waited until the woman left the area and then cautiously inspected the abandoned bag. To their dismay, several of the missing items from their property were discovered within the bag. Acting swiftly, the officers proceeded to the suspect’s nearby residence to confront her. With consent granted to search the premises, law enforcement officials successfully recovered several stolen items, including children’s toys.
Admission of Guilt and Item Return
During the course of the investigation, the suspect, identified as Deborah Hallyburton, confessed to her involvement in the crimes. In a commendable display of cooperation, Hallyburton actively assisted the officers in returning the stolen items to the rightful owner. However, due to the severity of the charges, she was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Burke County Jail. Currently, she remains in custody with a $5,000 secured bond. Notably, Hallyburton’s name does not appear on the list of current inmates as of today (November 15). A District Court hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, November 16.
