RUSTON, La. — In a shocking incident of violence on Monday, a 23-year-old Louisiana Tech University (LTU) student allegedly stabbed four people on campus in what authorities are calling a “random act of violence.” The victims, comprised of one graduate student and three non-students, were attacked as they were leaving the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center at around 9 a.m., according to ABC News. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old LTU student Jacoby Johnson, reportedly entered the building before running out and attacking the victims. LTU Police Chief Randall Hermes stated that Johnson “ran up behind them and surprised them,” stabbing them in the neck and back areas with a folding knife. The motive for the attack is still unclear.

The severity of the injuries varied among the victims. One victim was airlifted to a Shreveport hospital in critical condition, while two others were transported to local hospitals in serious but stable condition. The fourth victim refused treatment. Dominique McKane, a graduate student, was identified as one of the victims by The Ruston Leader.

After the attack, Johnson fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by campus police at the nearby Kidd Student Housing Complex. He was then taken to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center for injuries sustained during the initial attack. Johnson has since been charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder.

In a troubling development, Ruston Police Chief Steve Rogers revealed that his department had previous contact with Johnson a week prior to the attack. However, he provided few details about the nature of the contact, stating that it was not a criminal incident. The police had checked on Johnson at that time and found no cause for concern.
