18-year-old Arrested for Attacking Miami-Dade County Corrections Officer

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old man was taken into custody on Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a corrections officer outside the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County.

The suspect, Cristian Karlo Diaz More, who is currently homeless, had recently been released from the correctional facility located at 7000 NW 41st St. According to the arrest report, Diaz More was a former inmate at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Officer B. Vernon, the victim in the incident, was sitting in his vehicle during his lunch break when he noticed Diaz More banging on the passenger door window. Sensing trouble, Officer Vernon stepped out of his car and confronted Diaz More, whom he recognized as a recently released inmate.

According to the police report, Diaz More placed his belongings on the hood of Officer Vernon’s car before charging at him in an attempt to engage in a physical altercation. Despite the suspect throwing punches, Officer Vernon managed to subdue Diaz More until additional officers arrived at the scene.

Following the incident, Diaz More was arrested and is now facing charges of battery on a corrections officer.

Expressing her concern over the incident, MDCR Director Sherea Green issued a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of the safety of all members of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. Director Green stated, “Acts of violence perpetrated against our correctional officers, who have taken an oath to uphold their duties, will not be tolerated. Such acts will be met with severe punishment in accordance with the law. I am immensely grateful that the officer survived this perilous attack without any major injuries.”
