GRAFTON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice has identified the Ozaukee County sheriff\’s deputy and armed suspect involved in a November 2 fatal shooting.
The incident took place on November 2 in the town of Grafton, near County Highway C and Lakefield Road, just east of I-43. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), the incident unfolded around 11 a.m. when deputies attempted to apprehend the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Christopher Sewell, who had outstanding felony warrants.

In an attempt to evade authorities, Sewell fled the scene, leading deputies on a high-speed chase. To apprehend the suspect, law enforcement deployed a tire deflation device. The fleeing vehicle eventually came to a stop on Lakefield Road, prompting Sewell to abandon the car and flee into a nearby tree line, pursued by the deputies.

As the deputies closed in on Sewell, the DOJ reported that he “presented a weapon.” In response, Deputy Michael Zilke, who has eight years of law enforcement experience, fired his weapon, fatally shooting Sewell. Despite attempts to administer lifesaving measures, Sewell succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A firearm was recovered by investigators from the site.
