The body of 66-year-old Mary Wilson was discovered on September 14 after a male acquaintance conducted a welfare check at her residence in the 300 block of Byron Road. Immediately upon finding the body, the acquaintance contacted law enforcement. Wilson’s home is located near Exit 9 on Interstate 77, which is the junction with Garners Ferry Road.

Initially considered a suspicious death, the case quickly turned into a homicide investigation after the Richland County Coroner’s Office revealed that Wilson had died from blunt force trauma. The autopsy results prompted the Columbia Police Department to intensify their efforts in identifying the killer.

Although details about how Joyner was identified as his mother’s murderer remain undisclosed, the police believe that an argument between the mother and son occurred before her death. No bond has been set for Joyner, who is also being held for a probation violation in Richland County, as per jail records.

In recent years, Joyner’s criminal history has included three assault and battery charges, all of which resulted in guilty pleas or convictions according to court records in Richland County. These previous charges may shed light on the suspect’s potential motive or history of violent behavior.
