Police – Accident – Death – Obituary News : Newman, a parolee at large and an out-of-compliance sex registrant, was apprehended by Santa Monica Police Department officers on Wednesday, November 8, at 3:27 a.m. The officers responded to a call of a Prowler Now in the 200 block of 24th Street, after being alerted by two off-duty law enforcement officers who were providing private security services for the homeowner. The off-duty officers had noticed Newman attempting to gain entry into the backyard of the residence.

Upon their arrival, the officers found Newman being detained by the security personnel in the driveway of the house. The suspect, Charles Marcell Newman, was identified as a homeless individual with a history of criminal activity. He is currently under investigation for burglary and trespassing in Los Angeles.

Interestingly, this was not the first time Newman had targeted the same Santa Monica residence. In September and October, he was the subject of several prowling calls at the same location. Surveillance footage captured him attempting to open doors and windows around the perimeter of the house, as well as trying car door handles. His audacious acts continued on October 31st, when he was caught on camera in the backyard attempting to open windows. Detectives managed to identify him from the video and subsequently issued a detention and questioning warrant.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Newman has been involved in such crimes. The Santa Monica Police Department had previously arrested him for similar offenses, including burglary, resisting arrest, and violating parole and probation. He was convicted and served prison time for both incidents, which occurred in 2012 and 2019.

Following his recent arrest, SMPD detectives plan to present the evidence to the LA County District Attorney’s Office. They will be requesting charges against Newman for a completed burglary, multiple attempted burglaries, and a violation of his sex offender registration conditions. Currently, he is being held without bail for the parole violation. Newman’s first court appearance is scheduled for November 13th.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this individual or the incident to come forward.
