Accident – Death – Obituary News : A new suspect has been indicted for the 1997 shooting death of Damond Wittman outside of a nightclub in Deep Ellum, Dallas. After spending 25 years behind bars, Martin Lucio Santillan was recently proven innocent and freed. The Dallas County grand jury has now identified a new suspect, Michael Edward Nevarez, who was 16 years old at the time of the incident.

On July 14, 1997, Damond Wittman was tragically shot and killed at around 1:30 a.m. This incident led to the wrongful conviction of Martin Lucio Santillan, who spent a quarter century imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. However, in March of this year, Santillan was finally released after new evidence cleared his name.

Notably, no DNA evidence was ever linked to Santillan, yet he was arrested and charged with capital murder. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the trial, he was found guilty in 1998 and sentenced to life in prison. It was only due to advancements in DNA technology that Santillan’s innocence was eventually established, leading to his exoneration on March 22.

District Attorney John Creuzot acknowledged the significance of DNA advancements in this case, stating, “Because of the advancements in DNA technology, we are here today.” He also expressed gratitude towards Centurion Ministries for their unwavering support in bringing Santillan’s wrongful conviction to light.

In addition to clearing Santillan’s name, the new DNA evidence has now pointed towards a new suspect, Michael Edward Nevarez. The indictment filed by the Dallas County grand jury on November 14 accuses Nevarez of capital murder. Although officials have revealed that Nevarez was arrested in Colorado Springs, they have not disclosed his name until now due to him being a juvenile at the time of the offense, unless he is charged as an adult.

The recent indictment brings a glimmer of hope for justice in the long-standing case. The Dallas County grand jury’s decision to charge Nevarez indicates progress in uncovering the truth behind Damond Wittman’s murder. The details surrounding Nevarez’s involvement in the crime are yet to be fully disclosed.
