Investigation Underway Following Shooting Incident in Rural Pottawatomie County

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY — Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in a remote area of Pottawatomie County. Subsequently, an arrest has been made in connection with the incident.

The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when local sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence located in the 4700 block of Blackjack Road in rural St. George. According to Sheriff Shane Jager, the emergency call came through at approximately 6 a.m., reporting a shooting incident at the aforementioned address.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered an adult victim who had sustained a single gunshot wound. The injured individual was promptly transported to a hospital in Topeka by EMS personnel for further medical attention.

As the investigation progressed, law enforcement authorities were able to identify a suspect in the case. The individual in question has been identified as 35-year-old Matthew R. Young, a resident of Rural Wamego. Working in collaboration with the Riley County Police Department, the sheriff’s deputies successfully located and apprehended Young in Manhattan. Sheriff Jager stated that Young has been arrested on charges of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, as per the request of the authorities.

To protect the privacy of the victim, the sheriff’s office has refrained from disclosing their name at this time.
