A “freaked out” burglary suspect found himself trapped in a Florida subdivision full of cul-de-sacs and resorted to a violent car crash rather than surrendering to authorities, as shown in a video. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that both the suspect and his passenger survived the high-speed crash but were subsequently hospitalized.

The incident occurred on Monday, November 13, in the Preservation Pointe neighborhood, situated in Davenport, approximately 35 miles southwest of Orlando. Maps of the area indicate that the neighborhood consists of four cul-de-sacs, a loop, and a dead-end road.

According to officials, deputies were dispatched to the area around 3:30 a.m. in response to a car burglary. The sheriff’s office stated that “two suspects were observed attempting to break into multiple vehicles in the neighborhood.”

Upon spotting the suspect’s white 2006 Cadillac CTS, a deputy initiated a traffic stop. However, the suspect accelerated and fled into the neighborhood. The deputy opted not to pursue the vehicle due to the subdivision’s limited access points.

Deputies strategically positioned themselves to block the only exit out of the neighborhood, anticipating the suspect’s return. Video footage reveals that while speeding through the streets, the suspect drove past one deputy, made a U-turn, and raced down the same street in an attempt to find an escape route.

The suspect’s escape bid came to a sudden halt when the Cadillac violently collided with a parked, unoccupied vehicle. The impact was so forceful that the parked car was propelled to the other side of the road, where it collided with another parked car. Subsequently, the suspect’s disabled vehicle rolled to a stop in the middle of a three-way intersection.

Deputies wasted no time in extracting the two suspects from the wrecked Cadillac, securing them, and calling for emergency medical services to attend to their injuries. The driver, a 37-year-old man from Apopka, and his 31-year-old female passenger from Ocoee were identified as the individuals involved. The passenger remains hospitalized due to a fractured leg sustained in the crash.

Upon being treated and released from the hospital, the driver confessed that he fled because he had “just freaked out,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver now faces numerous charges, including four counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance with enhancement of crossing county lines, three counts of felony petit theft, three counts of fleeing to elude, conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana less than 20g, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting without violence.

This incident highlights the alarming lengths some suspects are willing to go to avoid apprehension, even resorting to dangerous acts that put their own lives at risk. The video evidence serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in their efforts to maintain public safety.
