The incident, which occurred on I-75 South, left the deputy’s patrol car flipped and prompted an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

According to the GBI, the incident unfolded at around 8 p.m. when a Turner County deputy attempted to pull over a speeding car on I-75 South. The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Nicholas Kemp from Indiana, refused to stop and instead led the deputy on a brief chase. Eventually, Kemp exited the highway in Chula, Georgia, and made his way to a Dollar General store in Tift County.

Upon locating Kemp at the store, the Turner County deputy made another attempt to stop him. However, Kemp accelerated and fled the scene. In response, the deputy fired shots at Kemp’s car, but failed to hit the suspect.

Undeterred, Kemp continued his reckless escapade down I-75 South. Fortunately, a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputy successfully executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on Kemp’s car, bringing the chase to an end. However, during the PIT maneuver, the deputy’s patrol car flipped, resulting in injuries that required medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

In light of the shooting incident, the Tift County Sheriff’s Office promptly requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation. The GBI will thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and compile a comprehensive report, which will be handed over to the Tift County Judicial Circuit for review.
