The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has recently announced its verdict on the Summary General Court Martial (SGCM) in the infamous Shopian 2020 staged encounter case. The tribunal has sentenced the accused Army Captain to censure from job and life imprisonment. However, the officer has been granted bail until the final verdict is reached.

In December of the same year, the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a chargesheet against the Army officer and two others before a local court. The comprehensive 300-page challan named Army Captain Bhupinder of Army’s 62 Rashtriya Rifles, Tabish Ahmad from Shopian, and Bilal Ahmad from Pulwama, highlighting their alleged involvement in orchestrating the staged encounter.

Subsequently, Captain Singh underwent court martial proceedings after a Court of Inquiry and Summary of Evidence found that the troops had exceeded their powers vested under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). The police chargesheet further claimed that the Army Captain had an ulterior motive of gaining the prize money of ₹20 lakh while conducting the operation.

The victims of this unfortunate incident were identified as three missing youths from Rajouri’s Pir Panjal valley. Their names were Abrar Ahmed (25), Imtiyaz Ahmed (20), and Mohammed Ibrar (16).
