Accident – Death – Obituary News : Community members in Charlottesville, Virginia, gathered on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of a tragic shooting at the University of Virginia (UVA) that claimed the lives of three students. The shooting occurred on November 13, 2022, when a field trip bus carrying a class of 22 students arrived at Culbreth Theatre. As the students began to disembark, the shooting erupted.

The victims of the shooting were three UVA football players: Lavel Davis, Jr., D’Sean Perry, and Devin Chandler. They were tragically shot and killed on the bus. Two other students, Michael Hollins and Marlee Morgan, were also injured in the incident. The alleged shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., a former member of the football team, was apprehended in Henrico County after a 12-hour manhunt. Jones now faces multiple charges, including six counts of aggravated murder, the most severe murder charge in Virginia, as well as aggravated malicious wounding charges.

In October 2023, the university commissioned a third-party investigation into the events leading up to the shooting. The investigation has been completed but has not yet been released to the public.

To commemorate the victims, an observance will be held on November 13, 2023. The observance will take place at 12:55 p.m. and will honor Chandler, Davis, and Perry. Community members will gather at various locations on the UVA campus, including the chapel and lawn, to pay their respects to the victims.

UVA President Jim Ryan expressed his hopes for the observance, stating, “It is my hope that this will be a chance for the entire community to join one another in remembrance. Tomorrow will be a hard day, there’s no single right way to spend it … Nothing can bring back Devin, Lavel, and D’Sean, but we can honor them — as well as Mike and Marlee — by remembering.”

The one-year anniversary serves as a somber reminder of the tragic loss experienced by the UVA community. As they come together to remember the lives lost, the community strives to find solace and healing in their shared sorrow..
