Haiti Gang Leader, Former Teacher, Killed in Violent Neighborhood
Concerns Arise Over Surge in Gang Violence Following Leader’s Death
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Iskar Andrice, a highly influential and feared gang leader in Haiti, was reportedly assassinated in the Belekou community of Cite Soleil, a sprawling seaside slum that he controlled for years. The death of Andrice, who was once a respected math and physics teacher, has raised concerns about the potential escalation of gang violence in the area.

Former mayor Esaïe Beauchard expressed regret over Andrice’s involvement in gang activities, emphasizing that he was an intelligent man. The exact date of Andrice’s death remains unknown.
The current mayor of Cite Soleil, Jean-Frédérique Islain, declined to comment on the matter when approached by The Associated Press.
A Notorious Gang Leader Involved in Heinous Crimes
Andrice was the leader of a gang involved in a multitude of criminal activities, including murder, robbery, extortion, rape, and hijacking of goods and trucks. According to a recent U.N. report, he later formed an alliance with Jimmy Chérizier, a renowned gang leader known as Barbecue. Together, they established the “G9 Family and Allies,” which quickly became Haiti’s largest and most powerful gang group.
Media interviews with Chérizier required prior approval from Andrice, highlighting his significant influence within the criminal organization.

In 2015, Andrice, along with other gang leaders, established the Siloé Foundation, a social foundation aimed at winning over the community and fostering a positive perception of themselves. However, their actions would soon reveal a much darker side.
The National Human Rights Defense Network in Haiti accused Andrice and other gang leaders of orchestrating deadly raids targeting innocent civilians in Haitian neighborhoods. Furthermore, they were held responsible for the disruption of operations at a major fuel terminal in the capital, Port-au-Prince, causing significant damage to the country’s infrastructure and prompting Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry to request urgent foreign armed intervention.
As news of Andrice’s demise spreads, concerns grow regarding the potential power struggle that may ensue among rival gangs vying for control over Cite Soleil. The power vacuum left by Andrice’s death could lead to an upsurge in gang violence, further destabilizing the already volatile region.
