According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident began at approximately 11 p.m. on Interstate 77 at the Strasburg exit in Franklin Township. A trooper from the New Philadelphia post initiated a routine traffic stop on a 2014 Ford Explorer due to a turn signal violation. Little did they know that this seemingly ordinary stop would escalate into a dangerous situation.

After exiting the highway, the SUV pulled into a nearby gas station. Recognizing the need for backup, the trooper called for assistance, and additional patrol officers promptly arrived at the scene. As the situation unfolded, an occupant in the back seat of the vehicle exited, causing the SUV to flee from the gas station.

The pursuit ensued, with sheriff’s deputies joining forces by strategically deploying stop sticks near Blacksnake Hill and Schneiders Crossing roads. The well-executed maneuver successfully halted the SUV’s progress just before it collided with the barrier. However, the situation took a perilous turn as the driver decided to accelerate towards the two deputies who were positioned nearby. In response, one of the deputies made the split-second decision to fire their weapon, with the shot striking the front-seat passenger of the SUV.

Undeterred, the SUV evaded capture once again but came to a stop shortly after on State Route 212. Law enforcement authorities wasted no time in apprehending the occupants of the vehicle, ensuring that they were taken into custody without further incident.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that the driver, a 43-year-old man from Gnadenhutten, had active warrants and no valid driver’s license. Consequently, he has been charged with failure to comply and felonious assault. He was subsequently transported to the Tuscarawas County Jail to await further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the injured passenger was promptly transported to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention. Fortunately, the injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, bringing some relief to an otherwise distressing situation.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigations into the incident to gather more information and ascertain all the facts surrounding this alarming incident.
