Accident – Death – Obituary News : Minnesota Soldier Among Five Killed in Tragic Helicopter Crash in Mediterranean Sea

MINNEAPOLIS – The Department of Defense (DOD) has confirmed that a soldier from Minnesota was among the five soldiers tragically killed during a military aircraft training exercise over the Mediterranean Sea. The soldiers were on board an MH-60 Blackhawk helicopter engaged in aerial refueling training when the aircraft experienced an unexpected emergency, leading to the fatal crash. The DOD has stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the crash was a result of enemy or hostile actions. A U.S. official, speaking to CBS News, revealed that the deceased service members were part of the special operations forces deployed to Cyprus in preparation for possible evacuations in Lebanon or Israel.

Identifying the fallen soldiers, the DOD released their names on Monday. Among them was 24-year-old Sergeant Cade M. Wolfe from Mankato, Minnesota. The other soldiers were identified as Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen R. Dwyer, 38, from Clarksville, Tennessee; Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shane M. Barnes, 34, from Sacramento, California; Staff Sergeant Tanner W. Grone, 26, from Gorham, New Hampshire; and Sergeant Andrew P. Southard, 27, from Apache Junction, Arizona.

The U.S. Army’s Combat Readiness Center has launched an investigation into the crash to determine its cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.

President Joe Biden expressed his heartfelt condolences in a statement released on Sunday. He recognized the sacrifice made by these service members, stating, “Our service members put their lives on the line for our country every day. They willingly take risks to keep the American people safe and secure. And their daily bravery and selflessness is an enduring testament to what is best in our nation.” The President and First Lady, Jill Biden, offered their prayers to the families and friends of the fallen soldiers, emphasizing the nation’s shared grief and the solemn duty to support the families of those who serve.
