The victim, identified as 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis, Jr., was a student at Rancho High School in North Las Vegas. He tragically passed away less than a week later on November 7 at University Medical Center.

Jonathan Lewis, Jr. had plans to move to Austin, Texas to live with his father, Jonathan Lewis Sr., according to reports from 8 News Now. Lewis Sr. expressed his devastation over the incident and said, “children don’t even know what they’re doing half the time.” He called for forgiveness and urged the attackers to come to terms with their actions.

The attack on Lewis Jr. reportedly occurred when he came to the defense of a smaller friend who was thrown into a trash can by a group of bullies. The New York Post reported that the mob of approximately 15 attackers turned their attention to Lewis Jr. after he confronted them. A GoFundMe page set up by his family detailed the sequence of events.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department’s homicide unit is currently investigating the case, but no arrests have been made yet. The details of the investigation have not been released to the media, according to Fox News.

Lewis Sr. hopes that his son’s tragic death can spark a conversation about youth violence in the city. He expressed his love for his children and called it “unimaginable” that such violence could occur.

The victim’s family has been informed by investigators that murder charges are pending against several students involved in the deadly encounter.
