Cottage Grove Man Nicholas R. Payne Arrested for Menacing, Firearms Possession, and Harassment with Drone

Police – Accident – Death – Obituary News : COTTAGE GROVE, Oregon – A Cottage Grove man was arrested on Saturday afternoon following an investigation into a menacing incident, resulting in multiple charges, as reported by the Oregon State Police. The suspect, identified as Nicholas R. Payne, 41, of Cottage Grove, was apprehended on November 11 after being accused of threatening individuals at a residence in Lane County. This arrest comes after an extensive weeks-long investigation, during which authorities discovered that Payne, a suspected felon, was in possession of firearms and explosives. Moreover, he allegedly harassed hunters using a drone, leading to his additional charges of first-degree criminal mischief, menacing as domestic violence, second-degree theft, and misdemeanor hit and run.

The Oregon State Police, in collaboration with the OSP SWAT team, obtained a search warrant for Payne’s residence on Bennett Creek Road the following day. During the execution of the warrant, troopers seized a total of 44 firearms. Notably, among the seized weapons was an AR-15 rifle equipped with a silencer, along with a live grenade and ballistic armor. These findings have resulted in Payne facing further charges, including obstructing the taking of wildlife, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a destructive device, unlawful possession of machine guns and certain short-barreled firearms and firearms silencers, and being a felon in possession of body armor.

The investigation conducted by the OSP remains ongoing, with authorities planning to request additional search warrants. As of November 13, Payne is currently in custody at the Lane County Jail, as confirmed by jail records.
