Accident – Death – Obituary News : BOSTON – Army Staff Sgt. Tanner Grone, a 26-year-old soldier from Gorham, New Hampshire, was among the five U.S. soldiers tragically killed in a helicopter crash in the Mediterranean Sea. The Pentagon confirmed the devastating news on Monday.
According to the Defense Department, the MH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crashed during a refueling exercise in the eastern part of the Mediterranean due to an “in-flight emergency.” The incident occurred on Friday, and all five soldiers on board, who were part of the U.S. Army Special Operations aviation, lost their lives.

Sgt. Grone enlisted in 2017 as a Black Hawk repairer and later served as a flight instructor and MH-60M Black Hawk crew chief. He had deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as participated in several no-notice deployments and exercises. His dedication and bravery were recognized through various awards and decorations, including the Air Medal with Combat device, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal with combat device.
The other soldiers who tragically lost their lives in the crash were identified as Chief Warrant Officer 3 Stephen Dwyer, 38, from Clarksville, Tennessee; Chief Warrant Officer 2 Shane Barnes, 34, from Sacramento, California; Sgt. Andrew Southard, 27, from Apache Junction, Arizona; and Sgt. Cade Wolfe, 24, from Mankato, Minnesota.
The Department of Defense emphasized that there were no indications of enemy or hostile actions causing the crash. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
It has been revealed that the five soldiers were deployed to Cyprus as a precautionary measure in case an evacuation of Lebanon or Israel became necessary. This information was confirmed by a U.S. official speaking to CBS News.
