Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, was struck by tragedy as three individuals, including an elderly couple, lost their lives in two separate road accidents. The first incident occurred on Saturday on the National Highway at Jirania, located on the outskirts of Agartala.

The victims of the first accident were identified as Madan Roy (57) and his wife Dipa Roy (45). Witnesses reported that the couple was riding a scooter when they were struck from behind by a speeding motorcycle driven by three youths. The motorcyclists fled the scene after the collision. The injured couple was quickly rescued by a police patrol van and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the doctors attending to them declared them dead later that night. Madan Roy was a well-known businessman from Jirania and was visiting pandals, temporary structures constructed for religious purposes, ahead of the Diwali festival.

The tragic incident cast a pall of sorrow over the Diwali celebrations in Jirania, where a 42-ft idol of Goddess Kali had been erected. The local community expressed their grief and shock at the untimely demise of the elderly couple, who were well-respected members of the society.

In another unfortunate incident at the same location, a young man named Biswajit Debnath (18) lost his life, while his pillion passenger, Sagar Das (19), sustained critical injuries. The two were returning to their village near the National Institute of Technology after a late-night trip to Agartala. The collision resulted in Biswajit’s immediate death, while Sagar Das was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The police have initiated investigations into both accidents and are searching for the absconding motorcyclists involved in the first incident. They have also arrested the truck driver responsible for the collision that claimed Biswajit’s life.

These tragic accidents serve as a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. The loss of lives has left the community in mourning, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of road safety awareness.
