BENGALURU: A 60-year-old woman, Shaila, sustained serious injuries on Sunday morning after being hit by a minivan driven by an allegedly drunk man in Challakere, Kalyan Nagar, east Bengaluru. The incident occurred when Shaila was on her way to a temple with her teenage granddaughter to offer prayers on the occasion of the Deepavali festival.

According to the Hennur police, the minivan, driven by a man named Kumar, hit two other vehicles before crashing into the compound wall of a house. The impact of the collision left Shaila with a fractured right leg, but she is now out of danger.

Eyewitnesses reported that the minivan was parked on the roadside when Kumar suddenly started the vehicle and drove it into Shaila, hitting her head-on. Fortunately, her granddaughter managed to escape unhurt. After hitting Shaila, Kumar continued driving and collided with another parked vehicle and a motorcycle before finally crashing into the compound wall.

Kumar, a 60-year-old mason, was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Police stated that his alcometer reading was more than 200mg/100ml, well above the legal limit of 30mg/100 ml. Despite his intoxicated state, Kumar did not attempt to flee the scene. Instead, he got out of the van and sat on the broken compound wall until the police arrived.

It was revealed that Kumar had been partying until the early hours of Saturday after receiving a festival bonus. He was subsequently arrested and a case has been registered against him. However, he was released on bail.
